"Chance"

My dearest little Chance, who
softened hearts with just a look,
Who could ever have known the final
chapter of your book?
My heart is filled with sorrow, for
no longer are you here,
But my mind is filled with memories
I'll always treasure dear.
When you melted in a person's arms-
a feeling no words can say-
You made them feel special in your
own personal way.
The friends you made in your life
stretch far from East to West,
Each one has the feeling, "It
was I whom he liked best!"
We too remember fondly those times I
took you to train,
When you'd leave the ring with an
indignant look and toss of your beautiful mane.
And, OH! The times I thought I was
teaching something new,
Only to realize eventually 'twas not
me who was training you!
But far more often you'd play along
and before friends' very eyes,
You'd show you knew every command
and our hearts would swell with pride.
The memories I have of you number
the raindrops that made the sea,
Each one truly a blessing God gave
through you to me.
I'll always remember you as you
were, so beautiful and sweet.
No Dog will ever replace you, for
it's far too big a feat.
So many praises I could write of
you, your tribute would go forever.
Alas, I must say goodbye, my friend,
until we cross The Bridge together.

This has to be the hardest
webpage update I have had to do. Chance's death was so sudden and so tragic
that it has been difficult for us to absorb. He was playing in his co-owner's
backyard with a couple of other dogs-- two of which he has lived with for a
year. There was no blood, no fight, and Donna was keeping an eye on them from
the house. We can only assume that in the twilight, one of the dogs misjudged
distance and Chance's neck was broken. We will forever be deeply saddened, but
freak accidents happen. As hard as we try to protect them, sometimes it is just
time for them to go to The Bridge. Chance was to come back home to retirement
within 2 weeks of his death. We are still very proud of Chance and his
Co-owner, Donna Webb, for their early accomplishments in the obedience ring.
Chance earned his CD last year in a very short time and the pair was
campaigning for his Open obedience title when he died. They had earned two
first placements and two legs of their CDX. Donna, thank you for your hard work
with Chance and for being such a great home while he was with you.
